    A Topology-Independent Mapping Technique for Application-Specific Networks-on-Chip

    Get PDF
The design of Networks-on-Chip (NoCs) involves several key issues, including the topological mapping, that is, the mapping of the processing elements or Intellectual Properties (IPs) to the network nodes. Although several proposals have been focused on topological mapping last years, this topic is still an open issue. In this paper, we propose, in an extended manner, a topology-independent mapping technique for application-specific NoCs that can be used with regular or irregular topologies, and with any routing algorithm. This technique globally matches the communication pattern generated by the IPs with the available network bandwidth in the different parts of the network. The evaluation results show that the proposed technique can provide better performance than other mapping techniques not only in terms of average latency and network throughput, but also in terms of power consumption

The MANGO Process for Designing and Programming Multi-Accelerator Multi-FPGA Systems

[EN] This paper describes the approach followed in the European FETHPC MANGO project to design and program systems made of multiple FPGAs interconnected. The MANGO approach relies on the instantiation and management of multiple generic and custom-made accelerators which can be programmed to communicate each other via shared memory and through synchronization registers. The paper introduces the low level architecture including the multi-FPGA interconnect deployed, the communication protocol and the architectural template-based approach to simplify the design process. Laboratorio oficial J.M. From a FPGA Prototyping Platform to a Computing Platform: The MANGO Experience

[EN] In this paper we describe the evolution of the FPGA-based prototype deployed in the MANGO project, from a hardware prototyping platform of HPC architectures to a computing platform targeting HPC and AI applications. Our main goal is to reinvest on the MANGO cluster by providing a duality in its use for both large-scale hardware prototyping and highperformance computation. From our experience we can reach several interesting conclusions about the complexities and hurdles that lay below FPGA technologies, and therefore, shedding some light onto the real complexities that difficult the adoption of FPGAs on either large-scale pure HPC systems or on hybrid systems (HPC + BigData/Ai).This work is supported by the European Commission through RECIPE and DeepHealth projects, under the Horizon 2020 program, grant number 801137 and 825111, respectively.Flich Cardo, J.; Tornero-Gavilá, R.; Rodríguez, D.; Russo, D.; Martínez Martínez, JM.; Hernández Luz, C. An array of leaky wave antennas for indoor smart wireless access point applications

    Get PDF
An array of leaky-wave antennas (LWA), designed for indoor smart wireless access points applications is presented in this work. It is designed to produce directive frequency scanning in the 2.45 Wi-Fi band. More particularly, it is demonstrated how three different Wi-Fi channels, namely channel #1 (2.412 GHz), channel #6 (2.437 GHz), and channel #11 (2.462 GHz), can be directed towards different directions in space and offering high gain. In this way, it is proposed a simple channel-hopping technique to provide high signal levels in a wide area, and thus assure high data transmissions. The array is designed in single layer planar technology, using low-cost laminate to provide a low-profile antenna structure which can be mounted on ceilings. This work has been supported by Spanish national projects TEC2016-75934-C4-4-R and European Erasmus Grant KA107 Morocc

Spanish study of anticoagulation in haemodialysis

This study's objectives were to determine which anticoagulation methods are commonly used in patients who are undergoing haemodialysis (HD) in Spain, on what criteria do they depend, and the consequences arising from their use. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Ours was a cross-sectional study based on two types of surveys: a "HD Centre Survey" and a "Patient Survey". The first survey was answered by 87 adult HD units serving a total of 6093 patients, as well as 2 paediatric units. Among these units, 48.3% were part of the public health system and the remaining 51.7% units were part of the private health system. The patient survey analysed 758 patients who were chosen at random from among the aforementioned 78 HD units. RESULTs: A) HD Centre Survey: The majority of adult HD units (n=61, 70.2%) used both kinds of heparin, 19 of them (21.8%) only used LMWH and 7 of them (8%) only used UFH. The most frequently applied criteria for the use of LMWH were medical indications (83.3% of HD units) and ease of administration (29.5%). The most frequently used methods for adjusting the dosage were clotting of the circuit (88.2% of units), bleeding of the vascular access after disconnection (75.3%), and patient weight (57.6%). B) Patient Survey: The distribution of the types of heparin used was: UFH: 44.1%, LMWH: 51.5%, and dialysis without heparin in 4.4% of patients. LMWH was more frequently used in public medical centres (64.2% of patients) than in private medical centres (46.1%) (P<.001). LMWH was more frequently used in on-line haemodiafiltration (HF) than in high-flux HD (P<.001). Antiplatelet agents were given to 45.5% of patients, oral anticoagulants to 18.4% of patients, and both to 5% of patients. Additionally, 4.4% of patients had suffered bleeding complications during the previous week, and 1.9% of patients suffered thrombotic complications. Bleeding complications were more frequent in patients with oral anticoagulants (P=.001), although there was no association between the type of heparin and the occurrence of bleeding or thrombotic complications. CONCLUSIONS: We are able to conclude that there is a great amount of disparity in the criteria used for the medical prescription of anticoagulation in HD. It is advisable that each HD unit revise their own results as well as those from other centres, and possibly to create an Anticoagulation Guide in Haemodialysis

The definitive version was published in ACM Computing Surveys, Vol. 53, No. 5, Article 95. Publication date: September 2020. https://doi.org/10.1145/3403956[EN] Performance and power constraints come together with Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor technology scaling in future Exascale systems. Technology scaling makes each individual transistor more prone to faults and, due to the exponential increase in the number of devices per chip, to higher system fault rates. Consequently, High-performance Computing (HPC) systems need to integrate prediction, detection, and recovery mechanisms to cope with faults efficiently. This article reviews fault detection, fault prediction, and recovery techniques in HPC systems, from electronics to system level. We analyze their strengths and limitations. Finally, we identify the promising paths to meet the reliability levels of Exascale systems. This work has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 (H2020) research and innovation program under the FET-HPC Grant Agreement No. 801137 (RECIPE). The misuse of medicines is a global public health concern that needs to be taken into consideration and requires actions across all government sectors and society. The aim of this study is to identify trends of drug abuse in Catalonia, a region of Spain located in the South of Europe. For this purpose, a questionnaire-based detection tool was created and implemented in 60 community pharmacies. Out of 548 questionnaires (98.4%), 64.2% of participants were men and the highest age proportion was 25-35 years (31.4%). Potential drug abuse was the highest in urban pharmacies (84.9%). The main drug class involved were benzodiazepines (31.8%), codeine (19.3%), tramadol (7.5%), methylphenidate (5.8%), gabapentinoids (5.8%), cycloplegic drops (4.4%), z-drugs (2.6%), piracetam (2.2%), dextromethorphan (1.6%) and clomethiazole (1.1%). The majority of drugs were requested without prescription (58.6%) and through probably forged prescriptions (23.7%). Slightly less than half (49.8%) of the patients request frequently to the pharmacist, especially in rural and mountain pharmacies (73.3% and 88.5%, respectively). A small proportion (10.8%) were requested with intimidation. Pharmacists only supplied in 21.7% of the cases. This study has demonstrated the suitability of the new detection system, being a useful approach to replicate in other locations with similar needs
